IEEE 1901

The IEEE P1901 working group, which handles broadband transmissions over powerline networks, adopted the IEEE 1901-2010 standard at the end of 2010. The standard has the official name "Broadband over Powerline Networks" and includes the specifications for the physical layer( PHY) and the medium access control( MAC).

The 1901 standard can be used by all in-house powerline devices for local area networks( LAN), but also for broadband access in access networks( AN). The technology specified in 1901 offers transmission rates of 500 Mbit/s at a bandwidth of 100 MHz. In the in-house area, the bridgeable distance on a power line is 100 m; in the access network on the " last mile", distances of up to 1.5 km can be bridged with 1901-compliant adapters.

The standard supports broadband services in local area networks, applications in smart homes, smart grids and smart energy, it can be used as a platform for electric vehicles and other data distribution services. The main focus of the standard is on the efficient use of powerline transmission capabilities with the various powerline devices. It supports coexistence and interoperability between the different powerline devices, provides users with the desired bandwidth and a specified quality of service( QoS), and provides the necessary security in the transmission.

The 1901-2010 standard specifies two transmission methods for the physical layer (PHY): HomePlug 's AV2 with Fast Fourier Transformation( FFT), Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex( OFDM) and Panasonic's High Definition Powerline Communication( HD-PLC). The former method is used in Europe and America, and the Panasonic method in Asia and Japan. Both methods can coexist with each other in the same power network, but are incompatible with each other.
