HDMI connector

There are several different HDMI connector variants for High Definition Multimedia Interface(HDMI) and the HDMI cable. All plugs are extremely flat and constructed with two rows of contacts. The standard HDMI plug is type A, a wider variant is called type B, the mini HDMI plug is type C, the micro HDMI plug is type D and the HDMI automotive plug is type E.

The HDMI Type A connector has 19 contacts facing inward, it is 13.9 mm wide and 4.5 mm high, unlike the DVI connector which is 39.5 mm wide. In addition, there is type B, with 29 contacts, but it is hardly used in practice

The 21.2 mm wide Type B connector allows a dual- link connection with six TMDS signal lines, a configuration with which data rates can be doubled. Unlike the Type B, the A and C connectors can only be used for single-link connections with three TMDS lines.

In addition to the standard size, there is also the type C mini-HDMI connector. Like type A, it has 19 contacts, but it is narrower and smaller than the standard version. Its width is 10.4 mm. The type C connector is only 2.5 mm high. The HDMI type A and type C connectors support data rates of up to 8.16 Gbit/s with HDMI 1.3 and 1.4. The HDMI 2.0 version supports data rates of up to 14.4 Gbit/s and HDMI 2.1 supports data rates of up to 38.4 Gbit/s.

The HDMI type D connector, known as the micro HDMI connector, which was designed for mobile devices with HDMI version 1.4 and is also 19- pin, has smaller dimensions than types A and C. The HDMI 2.0 connector has a diameter of 6.4 mm. At 6.4 mm x 2.8 mm, it is still much smaller than the mini HDMI type C connector. Connector type D meets all the electrical and mechanical requirements set out in HDMI 1.4 and can be used in digital cameras, camcorders, smartphones, multimedia players and other mobile devices.

For automotive technology, there is still the Auomotive HDMI connector type E The E connector has a locking mechanism that protects it in case of vibrations and shocks so that it does not come loose from the connector.
