H.264 advanced video coding (H.264/AVC)

The ITU standard H.264, also known as MPEG-4 Part 10 and MPEG-4 AVC (Advanced Video Coding), is an advanced video compression that features high-quality representations with a high compression factor. The bit rate reduction compared to MPEG-2 can easily be more than 50% with comparable quality.

H.264/AVC, a further development of MPEG-4, is based on a new coding method, it is network-compatible and has several application-specific profiles, ranging from videophones to videoconferencing, iPods, Internet video, Blu-Ray discs, high-definition television( HDTV) and archiving. H.264 compression supports constant bit rate( CBR) and variable bit rate( VBR), with a moderate data rate of 8 Mbps.

The H.264 profiles include the Baseline profile, Main profile, and Extended profile.

The Baseline profile is aimed at real-time communication for end devices, and thus video conferencing and video telephony. It uses the continuous I-frames and predicted frames (P-frames) as well as the CAVLC transformation. Due to its robust fault tolerance and low latency, the baseline profile has its particular strengths in dynamic networks on which the video data is transmitted at low bandwidth

The Main profile, aimed at the broadcast market, on the other hand, uses all Group of Picture (GoP) frames, it supports interlaced video and uses CAVLC and CABAC transforms. And in the Extended profile, interlaced scanning and progressive scan are supported. The Extended profile targets the transmission of problematic communication channels.

To increase data reduction, Advanced Video Coding varies the block size depending on the image changes, among other things. H.264/AVC is suitable for transmitting broadband video streams over the Internet and achieves throughput rates of about 1 Mbps.

With H.264/ SVC (Scalable Video Coding), there is a standardized extension for H.264/AVC that is suitable for video conferencing on personalcomputers. In this context, one also speaks of telepresence systems.
