GPS data

GPS data can be stored in various data formats and imported into geographic mapping programs such as Google Maps. There are various GPS data formats developed by navigation device manufacturers or geographic information system( GIS) manufacturers.

GPS data formats are those for the acquisition, storage, exchange and import/export of geospatial data. The data formats define the possible attributes for waypoints, routes and track points. Geographic coordinates are entered in latitude, longitude and altitude.

One of the best known GPS data formats is *.gpx, which stands for GPS Exchange Format. Others are Garmin Training Center XML (*.tcx) and Garmin Database (*.gdb), developed by Garmin. And Keyhole Markup Language (*.kml) is an exchange format for Google Earth.

GPS Exchange Format( GPX), Garmin Training Center XML (TCX) and Keyhole Markup Language( KML) are based on Extensible Markup Language (XML) as exchange formats.
