Federal Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information

The Federal Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information (BfDI) is the independent authority in Germany for data protection at public bodies in the Federal Republic of Germany and at all companies that offer corresponding telecommunications and postal services. The authority is located at the Ministry of the Interior. The BfDI is not responsible for data protection in the private sector. This is the responsibility of the respective data protection authorities of the federal states. The BfDI represents Germany in the European Union's Data Protection Working Party and also in the international conferences of data protection commissioners.
