Electrical Scrap Law

The implementation of the WEEE Directive on the disposal of electrical and electronic equipment is regulated in Germany by the Electrical Waste Act (ElektroG) promulgated in March 2005. Since the implementation of the ElektroG is a matter for the federal states, there are various interpretations of what is included under e-waste.

In order to be able to record the equipment that will have to be disposed of in a few years, all manufacturers and importers are registered in a central register, the Elektro-AltgerÃĪte-Register(EAR). In this EAR register, all devices are also recorded according to brand, type of device and number of units and must pay a fee for the devices requiring disposal.

The devices from the IT sector requiring disposal are personal computers, printers, monitors, telephones and fax machines. In addition, there are devices from the electrical engineering, electronics and consumer electronics sectors.

The devices requiring disposal are marked with the e-waste seal, a crossed-out trash can.
