Merchandise management systems are information systems used in retailing. They are multi-level systems with which the merchandise management processes
are supported across the various trade levels. Merchandise management systems can be used to adapt a wide range of requirements to the various trade networks, their logistics and distribution.
Merchandise management systems are used in the manufacturing industry, wholesale and retail, mail order and direct sales and control and monitor the individual trade levels. For the exchange of data, such trading systems use existing standards such as EDIFACT, for the electronic exchange of data for administration, business and transport, or the international localisation number (ILN) for the unique identification of industrial, commercial and service companies or also the European article number (EAN), a standardised barcode for the data capture of products.
