DVCAM format

The DVCAM format is one of many video formats for Standard Definition Television( SDTV). Like the classic DV format, the resolution is 720 x 576pixels and has a frame rate of 25 Hz. The video image has a sampling depth of 8 bits.

DVCAM uses 4:2:0 color subsampling and JPEG for data reduction. The resulting compression factor is 5:1, and the video data rate is 25 Mbit/s. Transfer to other DVCAM components is via the Serial Data Transport Interface( SDTI).

For tape recording, there are two cassette formats with a 1/4" magnetic tape. The DVCAM recording format differs from the DV format in that the track width has been increased to 15 µm and the tape speed has been increased to 28.2 mm/s. The DVCAM cassette has been designed with a new magnetic tape. These changes have reduced the recording time of a cassette, but at the same time provide greater security against signal loss.

DVCAM is used in amateur and semi-professional applications.
