DVB cable (CATV) (DVB-C2)

New television broadcast services such as HDTV, video on demand( VoD) or even 3D television( 3DTV) have much higher bandwidth requirements than conventional digital TV. As a result, the existing cable distribution networks for DVB-C, over which these services are transmitted, must be upgraded with optical transmission media and downsized in their clusters. DOCSIS supports the upgrade and conversion of broadcast distribution systems to modern telecommunications infrastructures.

To this end, DVB-C2, an enhanced variant of DVB-C for the transmission of modern telecommunications services over cable distribution networks, has been developed. DVB-C2 features powerful error protection consisting of a combination of Low Density Parity Check( LDPC) and the BCH code. This combination is also used in DVB-S2 and DVB-T2. In addition, as in DVB-T2, Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex( OFDM) is used as the modulation method. OFDM technology is extremely bandwidth-efficient and extends the conventional 8 MHz bands.

The advantages of DVB-C2 are improved video compression, better signal-to- noise ratio, higher channel efficiency and flexible 8 MHz frequency bands.
