Charging Interface Initiative

The Charging Interface Initiative e.V. (CharIN) is an association that promotes and further develops the Combined Charging System(CCS) for fast and easy charging of electric vehicles.

CharIN operates internationally and is significantly promoted by founding members BMW, Audi, Daimler, Ford, Opel, Porsche and Volkswagen. Other companies include charging plug manufacturers PhoenixContact and Mennekes, as well as TÜV Süd.

CharIN's goal is to standardize the Combined Charging System for high performance worldwide with a uniform charging plug, the Combo plug. This goal should be quickly achievable in Europe, because the European Union has required charging stations to have a connector for fast charging since 2015, and the charging infrastructure is also being standardized. The interface between the electric car and the fast-charging station is realized by the combo plug, a combined charging plug for alternating and direct current.
