BroadR Reach

Ethernet offers the bandwidths required in automotive technology for driver assistance systems and in-vehicle infotainment( IVI). These requirements are met by BroadR-Reach, an Ethernet concept for automotive Ethernet.

BroadR-Reach, developed by Broadcom, specifies the physical layer and, in contrast to the well-known automotive buses such as the LIN bus, CAN bus and FlexRay, has the advantage that it supports all automotive applications of driver assistance systems; including In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI), which works in automotive technology with the MOST bus, HDBaseT or another bus concept.

BroadR-Reach transmits data as differential signals bidirectionally in full duplex over a single pair of wires of an unshielded twisted pair cable, Unshielded Twisted Single Pair( UTSP). Known as One-Pair Ethernet( OPEN), the concept works with differential signals, it is scalable, robust, cost-effective and can be built on existing Ethernet components. BroadR-Reach uses the multivalued pulse amplitude modulation PAM3 as modulation method.

100Base- TX emerged from this process, although the specifications of 100Base-TX are more stringent than those of BroadR-Reach. The data rates of BroadR-Reach are 100 Mbps. Due to an efficient signaling system, the resulting bandwidth is reduced to 33 Mbps. Automotive technology places high demands on electromagnetic compatibility( EMC) so that no malfunctions are triggered in the event of accidents. These are met by BroadR-Reach.
