Betacam

Betacam is a video recording format developed by Sony and used in professional studio applications. Betacam is available in various DV formats for recording analog video and digital video.

The DV formatBetacam IMX works with a sampling depth of 8 bits, a color subsampling of 4:2:2, uses a video compression according to MPEG-2 and has a data rate of 50 Mbps. For data transmission of uncompressed video Betacam IMX has the SDI interface and for compressed video the SDTI interface. Betacam IMX digital video complies with the BT.601 standard.

Another version is Betacom SX, which works with the same standardized video signal according to BT.601, i.e. with a resolution of720 x 576 visible pixels. The digital video data is recorded on the 1/2" wide cassettes. The recording time is 92 minutes. The video compression is 10:1 and uses MPEG-2, the interfaces available are SDI and SDTI, Serial Data Transport Interface (SDTI), for transmission on coaxial cable. Via the SDTI interface, the compressed data streams of the video and audio data can be exchanged at four times the speed via coaxial cable.

Digital Betacam is another digital version with 4:2:2 color subsampling and 10-bit quantization. The data compression is 2:1. The maximum data rate is 126 Mbit/s, which means that 60 GB can be transferred per hour, and the color subsampling is the same as with classic Betacam 4:2:2. Due to the high sample depth, Digital Beta is suitable for professional use.
