B-ISDN signalling

In B-ISDN networks, signaling takes place in separate signaling channels, as in ISDN. Since signaling is highly complex due to the high bandwidth and the large number of services to be supported, B-ISDN works with meta-signaling, a type of signaling of the signaling channels. In this case, the signaling channels are set up as required.

Meta-signaling uses its own ATM virtual channel( VC), with the Virtual Channel Identifier( VCI equal to 1) and the Virtual Path Identifier( VPI equal to 0). Setting up a virtual channel for signaling can be done without the presence of an AAL link, since meta-signalingcommands are transmitted in an ATM cell. After a virtual channel is established, the signaling channels are established from the ATM Adaption Layer (AAL). Following these two steps, establishment of the meta-signaling and the signaling channels, the signaling protocol can become active. The Q.2931protocol proposed by the International Telecommunication Union( ITU), an extension of the D-channel protocolsQ.931 and Q.933, is used for this purpose. Q.2931 is used to establish connections over public and private UNI interfaces as well as private NNI interfaces.

ATM signaling

ATM signaling

As a switching protocol for B-ICI(Broadband Inter Carrier Interface) interfaces within public ATM networks, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) specified the B- ISUP protocol according to Q.2761 to Q.2764. The signaling specifications of the ATM Forum are gradually approaching the ITU specifications. The subscriber network interface UNI 3.0, UNI 3.1 and UNI 4.0 describe the signaling for the UNI interface, the Private Network to Network Interface( PNNI) describes the signaling for the private network-to-network interface, and the Broadband Inter-Carrier Interface (B-ICI 1.0/2.0) describes the signaling for the public NNI interfaces.
