ATSC standard

The Advanced Television Systems Committee(ATSC) has adopted various standards for television transmission of digital TV and analog TV and has also standardized 18 picture formats that differ in vertical and horizontal picture resolution. The different picture formats concern HDTV, digital TV with Standard Definition Television( SDTV) and the VGA format in full- frame and half-frame interlaced playback and with different frame rates.

In addition to picture formats, the ATSC standard also specifies audio services. These can work with the original sound, a translation or a commentary sound and can be backed with music, speech and effects. The audio service also offers the possibility of text insertion into the television picture. The ATSC standard Audio Code Number 3( AC-3) prescribes audiocompression.

The different picture formats in the ATSC standard

The ATSC standard defines the syntax for video streams for MPEG-2video compression. This is how the MPEG-2 profiles are defined in the standard:

MP@ML (Main Profile @ Main Level) is the digital format comparable to analog NTSC. The data rate is 15 Mbit/s.

MP@HL (Main Profile @ High Level) is used for the transmission of HDTV. The max. data rate is 80 Mbit/s.

In addition to the picture and audio specifications, the ATSC standard also describes additional services such as program guidance PSIP, the insertion of subtitles and for interactive advertising.
