5 gigabit Ethernet (5GbE)

5 Gigabit Ethernet (5GbE) was standardized like 2.5GbE by IEEE under 802.3bz. In contrast to 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet, 5GbE can only operate on Cat 6 UTP cables according to 5GBase-T.

The data rate for 5GbE is 5 Gbit/s, the spectral bandwidth is 200 MHz and the maximum cable length is 100 m.

The 5GbE concept is especially suitable for connecting access points( AP) with data rates above 1 Gbit/s that support 802.11acaccess points. The physical layer technology is based on 10GBase-T, whereby the data rate of 10GbE is reduced to half with 10 Gbit/s.
