2D code reader

2D code readers are optical systems with which 2D codes are recorded and their information decoded. These systems can be stand-alone readers for 2D codes, but also scanner software for smartphones. As certainly more than 50 different 2D codes have been developed, 2D code reader suppliers focus on the standardized and the most commonly used 2D codes, which include the Data Matrix code and the QR code.

Functionally, 2D code readers work with optical image capture, whether they are standalone readers or smartphone readers. They pick up the 2D codes, analyze their location, which is determined by markings, and decode the scanned 2D code content. Due to the large number of 2D codes, there are readers that can decode several 2D codes, so-called multi-core readers.

The decoded information can be displayed on display devices or the smartphone screen and can also be used for further processing. For example, in mobile tagging, a 2D reader can be used to scan a 2D code and read the information, such as an address or email address into the address directory, or in the case of an Internet address, to build a link to the URL and display the website on the smartphone browser.
