IEEE definiert den IEEE 802.5/ISO 8802.5-Standard für Token Ring als ein Basisbandübertragungssystem auf STP-Kabel mit Datenraten von 1 und 4 Mbit/s sowie auf Koaxialkabel mit 4, 20 und 40 Mbit/s.

IBM unterstützt das standardisierte Verfahren mit 4 Mbit/s und eine eigene Variante mit 16 Mbit/s auf einer Mischung von STP und Fiber Optic.
Erst eine Ergänzung des IEEE-Standards vom November 1988 hat die 4/16-Mbit/s-Operation, LLC Typ 3-Unterstützung, Early-Token-Release-Verfahren, Station Management und Management Entity Specification erfasst. Weitere Themen betreffen Voice Grade Media (UTP), Reconfiguration, Mutiple Rings, Conformance Testing und Fiber Optic.
