Das Third Generation Partnership Project 2 (3GPP2) zielt im Gegensatz zu 3GPP auf den nordamerikanischen und asiatischen Mobilfunkmarkt. Unter der Bezeichnung 3GPP2 werden die Spezifikationen für die Mobilfunknetze der 3. Generation ( 3G) entwickelt. Die Vereinbarung wurde 1998 zwischen asiatischen und nordamerikanischen Telekommunikationsverbänden getroffen.
Zu den erwähnten Verbänden gehören Association of Radio Industries and Business ( ARIB) aus Japan, China Communications Standards Association (CCSA) aus China, Telecommunications Industry Association ( TIA) aus den Nordamerika, Telecommunications Technology Association (TTA) aus Südkorea und Telecommunications Technology Committee (TTC) aus Japan.
Mittels 3GPP2 sollen globale Funknetze entwickelt werden, die auf IMT-2000 resp. CDMA2000 basieren. Eines der Projekte von 3GPP2 ist Ultra Mobile Broadband ( UMB). Die Entwicklung der globalen Spezifikationen für die Funktechniken werden unterstützt und standardisiert vom American National Standards Institute ( ANSI), der Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) und der Electronics Industry Association ( EIA).
